I am a huge lover of natural light! It’s all I use in my work ~ no strobe, no modelling lamp, no flash ~ strictly Mother Natures recipe for the day!
I have clients asking me all the time, what’s the best season for light, to head outdoors for their family sessions, and each and every time I’m asked, I’m so completely torn. My answer always sounds a little like this though “I love all seasons for outdoor photography.” How can that be right? Let me explain further…..
There is an incredible difference in the light from one season to another, and it’s totally personal preference. For example, summer sunset skies produce a variety of pinks, purples, and blues, which are incredibly gorgeous, but some people simply don’t want such coloured art for their walls. Fall sunsets on the other hand offer up the warmest of hues. Orange and yellow, hazy, yet sharp, and oh so beautiful! Winter typically offers an incredible light as well. The common overcast skies make for some dramatic lighting and therefore show great depth in your images. And spring, well by the time spring comes around, everything just looks so darn pretty. The new buds on the trees, the grass looking so very green. It’s all very inviting!
And so you see, each season has it’s beauty, and we may not like them all for very different reasons. So, to answer the question of ‘which season is best?’ that one you’ll have to decide for yourself. What do you want to see displayed on your walls throughout the years? Which description invites you in more and would help to tell the story of your family? For when you answer these two very important questions, you shall have a clearer idea of when the best season to head outdoors for your family session will be. And when that time comes, I hope it’s me that you’ll be calling!!
